Alquas is a browser game. You can play without signing up: the first time you play online we make a guest account under the name you chose. This page says what we keep, why, for how long, and what you can do about it.

Who is responsible

Alquas is made by the Alquas Team, run by an independent developer in British Columbia, Canada, who is the controller of your personal data. Write to privacy@alquas.com about anything on this page; we answer within 30 days.

What we keep

Data Why How long
Your player name and tag (Sam#0042) So other players see who they play with, and your name stays yours across visits. It is public in the game. Until you delete your account
When you first and last played The time you last joined a room or the arena, so we can see who is playing and tidy up accounts nobody uses. Also the first time you played on the website and the first time you played inside Discord, so we can compare the two. Until you delete your account
How you found Alquas When you make your account: the site that linked you here (only its name, such as reddit.com) or the campaign tag in the link you followed, never the full address, who invited you if you came from a friend's link, and whether you made your account on the website or in the Discord Activity. Nothing is kept in your browser for this. Until you delete your account
Match results For each 1v1, 2v2 or 3v3 match you finish online: the date, mode, score, server region, and for your seat your team, whether you won or left early, your two elements and which attack each used, knockouts, deaths and damage dealt (a match from when ranked play was tested may also hold your rating before and after). Used to see how many players come back to play again, and for statistics about the game. Practice, Vs bots and the arena are not recorded as matches; the XP you earn in them is (see Renown, element mastery and daily goals). We also keep your record against each opponent you meet (wins each, who won last, the current run, when you first and last met), shown only to the two of you on the results screen, never to anyone else and never between two players where one has blocked the other; it is deleted when either of you deletes your account, and Account → Download my data lists it with each opponent's current name. From it we keep three counts for your rivalry callsigns (revenge wins, different opponents beaten, most wins over one opponent), with no one else's account in them; they are deleted with your account and listed in Download my data. Until you delete your account; after that the match stays only as an anonymous record, without your account
Days you played For each day you play online: the date, how long you were in matches and the arena, and how many matches you finished. Used to see whether players come back to play again; never shown to other players and never sent to anyone else. Account → Download my data lists them. 400 days, and deleted with your account
Renown, element mastery, daily and weekly goals, and Renown for players you brought in The XP you earned in each mode and element, your daily goals and this week's and last week's weekly goal, and for daily limits the time of your last practice claim. Also, for each day, how much XP you earned and whether you took the first win of the day, and for 2 days how many matches you finished against the same player (to halve XP past 15 a day). When a player your link brought in reaches Renown 3, a record that links the two accounts and the week you were paid for it (to pay you once and at most five a week); you see that player's current name on your Renown card for a week. When you come back after a week or more away, the day your welcome-back bonus started, its last day and how much of it is left (so it is given at most once every 28 days). Used to show your Renown and mastery and to unlock rewards. Account → Download my data lists them. Until you delete your account; daily goals and the same-player counts 2 days, weekly goals 2 weeks
Time trials Your best time and checkpoint splits per course and board (on the range trial, your knockouts and their times), the elements you ran with, and the run's inputs to check it; others see your name, tag and time or knockouts on the board. When your time or knockouts take a top-10 place on a board, we post your name, tag, place and result in the #leaderboard channel of our Discord server. Discord stores those messages; you can stop it in Account (turning it off removes your posts), and we delete them when you delete your account. Account → Download my data lists them. Until you delete your account
Skill rating and weekly boards Once a day we work out a skill rating from your matches (1v1, 2v2 and 3v3; guest accounts too). Normal and Hard bots count at a fixed strength, Easy bots never. We keep the number, how sure it is, the rated matches you played and won, how many of them were against bots, and the day of the last one. It never decides who you play. The game shows only the weekly boards as posted and, to you alone, how close you are to being listed. Each week the ten highest ratings of saved accounts, and the ten who earned the most Renown that week, are posted with name, tag and the region you play in (the continent of the game servers your recent matches ran on, never your country) in the #leaderboard channel of our Discord server. Discord stores those messages; you can stop it in Account (turning it off removes you from past posts), and we remove you when you delete your account. Account → Download my data lists them. Until you delete your account
XP waiting in your browser If you practice or play Vs bots before you have an account, the XP you earned waits in this browser as one number, nothing else. Once you have an account (the first time you play online), it is sent to it and removed from the browser. Clearing this site's data removes it too. Until it is sent to your account
Ratings (from when ranked play was tested) Ranked play has ended and no rating is written any more. If you played rated matches while it was tested, your rating for 1v1 and 2v2 (the number, how certain it is, rated matches played and won, your badge, your best badge and the date of your last rated match) stays on your account. It is shown nowhere. Until you delete your account
Match recordings We record online matches for up to 7 days. The players of a match can watch it again, and share a link to it if the match was open to spectators; anyone with that link sees the match with the players' names, as a spectator could have. A recording stores no names; we keep which accounts played in it, as we do for match results. Deleting your account unlinks it from every recording at once. Account → Download my data lists the recorded matches you played in. 7 days
Your settings The crosshair you picked (shape, color, size and so on) and when you last changed it, and your Streamer mode switches (hide other players' names; hide yours from them) with when you last changed each, so they follow you to every device you sign in on. Until you delete your account
Your country The country you signed up from and the one you last played from, as Cloudflare's network reports it (not your IP address, and not anything more precise), so we know where players come from and where to run servers. Never shown to other players. Until you delete your account
Sign-in cookie A random token that keeps you signed in. When you play inside Discord, a second one tells us which Discord account you are, because Discord does not always say so. Strictly necessary for online play, so we do not ask for consent and show no banner. A third, short-lived cookie holds a database version number so your own changes show right away; it says nothing about you. 180 days after your last visit (the second one: a day; the database version one: 5 minutes)
Discord link If you link or sign in with Discord: your Discord user id, username and display name, so you can sign in on any device and we can find your account when you ask for help. We never ask Discord for your email and never keep Discord's access tokens. Other players never see your Discord details. Until you delete your account; the username is refreshed each time you sign in
Playing in Discord If you play Alquas inside a Discord voice channel: Discord tells us which Discord account you are (the same details as the Discord link above) and which running Activity you are in, so everyone in the call lands in the same room. Before you join the call's room, the game shows you who is in it: their names, banners and looks, their sides and whether they are ready. Only people Discord lists in the same call can see this; it is read from the room each time and nothing more is stored. The Activity's id names the room; we keep it while the call lasts, to see when it ends, and delete it then. Until then the room also keeps what the summary below is made from: the country of the first person to arrive, how many came and when, how many matches were played, and a scrambled code for each seat (never your account or Discord id) so each person counts once and the last winners can be split up when teams are shuffled. Discord also gives the game a sign-in token so it can open Discord's invite window; it stays in the game while you play, and we never store it. We never see your voice, your messages or your Discord friends. Your account keeps one more thing: the time you first played inside Discord, and the time you first played on the website, so we can compare the two. While the call lasts, then deleted; the first times you played inside Discord and on the website until you delete your account
Summaries of games in Discord calls When a group plays in a Discord call, we send ourselves a short summary in a private Discord channel: the room's code, the country, how many people were in the call, how long it lasted and how many matches were played. It never contains names, accounts, Discord ids or addresses. Discord stores those messages; we delete them after 3 months. 3 months
Friends and blocks With a saved account: who you are friends with, the requests you sent or got, and who you blocked, so your list follows you. Other players see only whether you are their friend. What you are doing (in a room, in a match) and the banner you wear are shown to your friends while you are online, and never stored. While your room lets friends join and has a free seat, your friends also get its code so they can join you; turn "Friends can join" off in the room to stop that. "Appear offline" hides all of it. Your friends also see when you were last online, rounded to the hour or day; it does not move while you appear offline. Until you remove them or delete your account; a request nobody answers is deleted after 30 days
Your public look With a saved account: the body color, banner, outfit and plaque you chose, so your friends and players you met see them on their Friends list while you are away (the same look every player in a room already sees), and so the look follows you to another browser. Your picks are kept as you made them, including an item you cannot wear right now, so it comes back when you can. Where factions are on, a look per faction (body color and outfit) and which faction's look your friends see. Until you change it or delete your account
Searching for a match While you search for a public match: the server region you chose and when you started, so you can be paired by arrival order. Never written down; a count of how long searches take is kept without anything about you. Only while you search
Who is playing right now While you play, the game's admin can see your name, country, the Cloudflare data center you connect through and your connection quality, to keep matches running well. None of it is stored. Only while you play
Who you played with Saved players you shared a match or the arena with, so you can find them again under Recent players. 7 days
Friend link The code in your friend link, so people who open it can send you a request. Until you make a new link or delete your account
Links you share When you share a link to your room, your arena or a replay of a match you played in: what it points to, when you made it and how many times it was opened. Nothing about who opened it. Anyone with the link sees your name (without its number) in the link's preview. A replay link also shows the match itself, with the players' names, to anyone who has it. 30 days (a replay link ends with its recording, within 7 days of the match)
Name reports If you report a player's name: which name and when, so we can review it. The player is not told who reported them. Deleted 90 days after we handle the report
Names the filter refused If our name filter refuses a name you try to take: the name as you typed it and when, so we can review it. The filter runs on our servers; the name is never sent to anyone else. Until we review it, then 90 days; deleted with your account
Reports on a deleted account If a player with reports against them deletes their account before we review them, or after we renamed them for one: their Discord id, the reported name and when each report was filed, to stop abuse (so reports cannot be erased by deleting the account and signing in again). Never who reported them, and nothing else about the account. 90 days after the deletion, or until we ban that Discord account (then see Bans)
Bans If an account breaks the rules: the reason, the dates and the account's Discord id, so a ban cannot be undone by deleting the account and signing in again. Until the ban ends, and the record is kept after that
Our change log When we change something on an account (a level, a gift, a group, a ban), we log what changed and when. Once the account is deleted, the log keeps the changes without naming the account. Kept; without the account once it is deleted
Tags and gifts If we add you to a group such as the alpha testers, or give you cosmetics or early features: which group or gift, when, and a short note on why. Your name is on the Contributors list only if you agree to it. While you are on it, the list shows your current name and banner, and, if you made items for Alquas and agree, pictures of those items. We review a name before it shows, and again after you rename yourself. Account → Hide me from the stadium and the credits (or Hide me from the credits, if you are only on this list) takes you off it. Until we remove it or you delete your account
Creators' uploads (playtest server only) If we invite you to make cosmetics: your creator token, kept only as a fingerprint that cannot be turned back into the token, and when you last used it; the work you send, its name and the credit you choose, and our notes on it. Deleting your account withdraws work still waiting for review. Until you withdraw it or delete your account; work we accepted stays
Creator kit (playtest server only) If we invite you to make cosmetics: the number hidden in your copy of the creator kit, and when you downloaded it; and whether the Blender add-on may open your submissions. When you delete your account, the kit is deleted and the game's servers no longer link the number to you. The creator agreement you signed still names it. Until you delete your account
Name notices When you rename yourself while your name is in the credits, we send ourselves a short notice in a private Discord channel so we can review your name: your new name and tag and your old one. Never your email or your account id. Discord stores those messages; we delete them after 3 months. 3 months
Feedback What you send from the feedback question: your rating, the topics you pick and what you write, with what you last played (such as 1v1, the arena or practice), the game version, ping and graphics setting, your country, whether you played on the web or in Discord, and, if you are signed in, roughly how many online matches you have played (none, 1 to 9, 10 to 49, or 50 or more). Not linked to your account unless you tick Let us reply. Please leave personal details out of the text. 90 days
Gameplay and connection statistics Counts that are not linked to your account (how many play, whether the game was opened inside a Discord voice channel and roughly how many people were in that call (1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 or more), which steps of the first-time tour and practice were reached, which sites send visitors, connection quality, how smoothly the game ran (frame rate, graphics setting and the screen's rough size: 1080p, 1440p or 4K, never its exact size), which countries and regions players come from and which Cloudflare data centers served them) to keep the game running well and improve the first minutes of play. Never linked to your account or to any identifier. In the UK, France, the Netherlands and outside the EU, this browser may keep the first and last day you played here, so we can count daily and returning players. It starts over after 13 months. Turn it off in Settings → Interface → Anonymous statistics. Elsewhere in the EU nothing is kept in your browser for statistics. 3 months
Error reports Anonymous technical reports when the game breaks, without your account or IP address. In the same countries, the last numbers before a crash are kept in that tab until it next loads (the same switch turns this off). 30 days
Server logs Our host, Cloudflare, keeps a record of each request your game sends to our servers: the time, the address without its query string, the answer, your IP address, your browser and its rough location. We use them only to find and fix problems. Your sign-in cookie is never written into them. 7 days

The game's database never holds your email address, IP address, precise location or device details. Your IP address is used for a moment to stop abuse (rate limits) and to pick a game server near you, and is never stored in the game's database; our host's server logs keep it for 7 days (see Server logs).

Legal basis: providing the game you asked to play (your account and sign-in, match results), and our legitimate interest in keeping it working and safe (statistics not linked to your account, error reports, server logs, rate limits).

Who helps us

Cloudflare (hosting, our database and server logs), Discord (sign-in, the Activity when you play inside Discord, and the private channel that holds our summaries of games in Discord calls), Google (sign-in, when offered) and Sentry (error reports, when enabled). Each has a data processing agreement with us. Some of them process data in the United States under standard safeguards. Cloudflare keeps read-only copies of our database in its regions around the world (North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Oceania) so the game answers faster; a change or a deletion reaches every copy within seconds.
